IP (International Protection) Ratings
Unlike NEMA ratings, IP (International Protection) ratings are globally recognized and describe how well a motor enclosure fends off water intrusion and dust. There are a number of different ratings, each with its own advantages and disadvantages. The most important consideration is your environment, and the level of protection you need for your specific application.
Open Drip-Proof (ODP)
ODP motors have venting holes in the end frame and main frame, designed to prevent drops of liquid or large particles from falling on the motor at an angle of 15 degrees or less. These motors are ideal for applications in dry, clean and well-ventilated indoor environments, but can be installed outdoors in some instances if they are fitted with a cover that won’t restrict air flow.
Oil Immersed (OI)
Designed for use in applications where the electric motor will be exposed to oil and oil vapor, an OI (Oil Immersed) motor has an external fan that blows cooling oil through the rotor shaft and stator. These motors have a rugged, sealed construction that protects the internal parts from oil and water vapor, while still allowing air to circulate freely around them.
Explosion Proof (ExP)
An explosion proof motor enclosure is specifically designed to withstand an internal explosion without rupturing. Closed Drip-Proof (CDP)

Closed drip-proof motors are the best option for washdown or other industrial environments that require an isolated motor design that requires little maintenance. This can lower downtime and maintenance costs, and extend the lifespan of your equipment.
