Water Slides
Water slides are fun and exciting, but they’re also sophisticated works of engineering. They require careful thought about how different people of varying sizes and body weights will slide, and they’re commercial water play equipment subject to the same fluid management principles as more serious rides like roller coasters.
The first patented water slide was a wooden ramp that led over Victoria Lake in New Zealand in 1906, and people rode on wooden sleds to glide down the slope. That simple design inspired many variations, including the world’s tallest slide, the Verruckt at Schlitterbahn in Kansas City.
Today’s water slides can be found at community pools, splash pads and other outdoor aquatic play areas. Many offer multiple lane options for high-speed thrills. Some are designed with deep curved sides to add a sense of free-fall, making them even more exciting. Some have themed components such as colorful lights and sound systems to set a mood and build excitement.
Those who prefer a more relaxed ride can choose inner tube slides, which allow riders to sit on an inflatable raft and be pushed down the slide by gravity and the force of water. These types of slides typically run slower than body slides, but they can still get riders’ hearts racing. For added safety, it’s important to install a water slide on flat, firm ground and to cover the base with a vinyl tarp to protect it from rough surfaces and sticks that could puncture the surface.
Dump Buckets
Some play structures focus on a single element that kids will fawn over like water slides and climbing nets, but other designs use multiple elements to create a complete aquatic playground experience. For example, this interactive splash pad combines a dumping bucket with a continuous spray to add extra fun and challenge. Kids can race to see who can get the fastest time on the water slide or climb up and over the tower platform without getting soaked by the automatic dumping bucket.
This two-tier splash table by Step2 includes space for a second kid to join in the action and encourages collaborative play with its three dumping buckets, water shooters and other accessories. Kids can send streams of water pouring down the chute and through a spinner, catch five mini frog toys in the pond, and more. The upper level of this splash pad also has a clip-on launching pad where kids can send two water shooters aimed at their opponent’s tipping bucket to fill it faster and cause an accidental splash.
Designed to attach to skid steer loaders, high dump buckets increase a loader’s dumping height to save on back-and-forth travel to reach dumping points. These attachments are available in a range of sizes and capacities to suit different loader models and job requirements. They also feature dual-cushioned, Rockland built cylinders that slow the movement at both ends for safe, smooth operation.
Ground Sprays
Simple and interactive, ground sprays squirt and bubble water that kids can splash in and around. They can be arranged in imaginative patterns and used to support the overall theme of a water playground. Themed ground jets are especially popular with older children who can use them to test their physical abilities.
