JIS S45C Round Steel

JIS S45C Round Steel

JIS S45C round steel is a medium carbon engineering grade steel,it can be supplied in the black hot rolled or normalized condition and has good machinability. However it does not respond satisfactorily to nitriding due to a lack of suitable alloying elements.

BEBON offers both rolled and normalized JIS S45C mild steel round bar and flat bar, the size range is from 5.5 to 250mm.

Mechanical Properties

Usually used in engineering and machinery, the medium carbon steel grade S45C has good machinability. This steel can be forged, rolled and machined in a variety of shapes. It also has excellent tensile and strength properties, and good plasticity and toughness.

It is generally supplied in the black hot rolled or occasionally in the normalised condition and can be successfully flame or induction hardened but will not respond satisfactorily to nitriding due to a lack of suitable alloying elements. It has a typical tensile strength structural steel of around 570 – 700 MPa and a Brinell hardness of 170 – 210 in the as supplied condition.

For the better machining properties, it is usually carburised to HRC 42-46. This enhances the machinability of the grade, making it easier to machine. In addition, it also increases the surface hardness of the steel, which enhances its wear resistance and ductility.

BEBON offers a wide range of JIS S45C round bar and flat sections, available in both standard and non-standard sizes. We can supply precision ground bar as well to your required tolerances, providing a high quality tool steel. Our extensive inventory is backed up by a fast response and comprehensive customer service. If you have any questions about our S45C carbon steel products, please feel free to contact us. We look forward to hearing from you.

Chemical Composition

S45C is a medium carbon steel grade within the machine structural range. It is mainly used in machinery manufacturing due to the good mechanical properties. It can be hardened to a surface hardness of up to HRC42 46. S45C can be supplied in both the black hot rolled and normalised condition.

The composition of S45C varies depending on the production method used to produce it. For instance, if it is S235JR I-beam produced by the hot rolling process, it will contain low levels of silicon and manganese, while if it is made by the open hearth or pure oxygen converter processes, its carbon content will be much higher.

In the normalised condition, S45C has a typical tensile strength of 570 – 700 MPa and a Brinell hardness of 170 – 210. This steel grade has excellent machinability and good forming characteristics, although it does not respond satisfactorily to nitriding.

We offer a full range of S45C steel products, including rounds, flat bar stock and sections. These can be cut to your specific requirements or ground bar for precision applications. Contact us for more information or to discuss your requirements in more detail. We offer a competitive pricing policy and can provide fast, reliable delivery. Our JIS S45C is suitable for a wide variety of industrial applications, such as shafts, bolts and general-purpose axles and shafts.

Heat Treatment

JIS S45C round steel is a medium carbon engineering steel supplied in the black hot rolled or normalized condition. It has a typical tensile strength of 570 – 950 MPa and a Brinell hardness of 170 – 280. It shows reasonable weldability and machinability when in the as-supplied condition. It can also be heat treated to improve these properties.

Heat treatment options for this grade of steel include normalizing, annealing, quenching and tempering. Normalizing is a process that softens the metal and unifies its microstructure. This helps to relieve internal stresses that develop during the forming process. It can also be used to reduce the sensitivity of the steel to cold-working and cutting. Annealing is a heat-treating process that softens the metal and adjusts its crystalline structure. This can be used to relieve internal stress or to resolve inconsistent fiber structures that develop during forming.

This grade of steel can be carburized to improve its surface hardness. It can also be flame or induction hardened to achieve surface hardness of up to Rc 54 – Rc 60 depending on the quenching medium used and section size. It does not respond well to nitriding however.

Applications

JIS S45C round steel is a medium carbon engineering grade steel with good overall mechanical properties. It can be cold drawn and forged and offers reasonable strength, ductility and hardenability. It can be successfully flame or induction hardened and has fair weldability when subjected to normal shop practices. This material is a popular choice for use in applications that require more strength and hardness than low carbon mild steels can offer but do not need the higher strength levels of high alloy, low alloy or high tensile steels.

AISI 1045 steel is commonly used to produce shafting that will be subjected to heavy load and torsional stresses. The material provides excellent dimensional accuracy and concentricity and can be turned, ground and polished to a finish that will reduce wear in high speed applications. It can also be used to make bolts and studs that are required to withstand considerable strain.

This material can be found in a wide variety of products, from wrought iron and cast steel furniture to automobiles and machine parts. It can be cold drawn, forged and hot rolled and is suitable for use in applications that need to withstand moderate to severe stress, but where the lower tensile and ductility of the low carbon grades are not needed. It can be successfully hot rolled to produce a range of flat shapes and sections.
